HEARTS aims to raise the profile of the arts in the experience of people learning to become primary school teachers.

For many years, primary teacher education has been dominated by government concerns about producing new teachers who can help their pupils achieve higher standards in the 'basics' - particularly mathematics and literacy. In fact, student teachers have concentrated so much on the basics during their training that other areas of the curriculum, and in particular the arts, have had little attention. Studies have suggested that, unless something is done to remedy this situation, the arts could vanish almost entirely from the experience of people learning to teach in the primary sector, with serious consequences in our schools.

HEARTS aims to reverse this trend.
